Darwin: The Top End in the dry season
Darwin's year splits into two seasons that behave like different places. From May to October the Dry brings blue skies, low humidity and cool nights; from November to April the Wet brings monsoonal rain and flooding that closes roads and sometimes whole parks. For a campervan that is a schedule, not a preference.
The city is a base rather than a destination. Three of the Territory's best-known parks sit within a day's drive, and all three are most usable in the same window.
Where this depot puts you
-
Kakadu
Kakadu is 253 km east, and the sealed Arnhem and Kakadu Highways reach Ubirr, Nourlangie and the Yellow Water billabong without low range. The falls are the exception: the Jim Jim and Twin Falls track is 4WD only, opening well into the dry once rangers have run their crocodile surveys and closing again for the Wet. A park pass is required.
-
Litchfield
Litchfield is the easy day out: waterfalls dropping into swimming pools, magnetic termite mounds, and the sandstone formations of the Lost City. Wangi and Florence are the set pieces, Buley Rockhole a chain of pools, and the Lost City and Reynolds Track are 4WD only.
-
Katherine and Nitmiluk
Katherine is the town and Nitmiluk the gorge country beside it, usually treated as one stop on the way south. The gorge is reached by sealed road and runs boat tours and canoe hire between the cliffs; Leliyn (Edith Falls) sits north off the Stuart Highway, with a pool that is one of the park's reliable swims.
Worth knowing before you book
- The Wet closes things: the falls road shuts for the season, Magela Creek can cut the road to Ubirr, and flood closures run from November to April.
- Crocodiles can attack in knee-deep water, so swim only where signs say it is safe, and remember that Kakadu's safest swim is a public pool.
- The Dry is the only sensible window for a campervan: cool nights, every track open, none of the access under water.
What you can drive
Every depot is stocked from the same national fleet — campervans, 4WD campers and a five-seat car. What is actually available on your dates is confirmed by the search, not assumed from a list.
The full fleet, with specifications · All pickup locations
A Top End pickup is a separate journey from the Fraser Coast, where vehicles come from Brisbane; the fleet pages are the place to weigh a 4WD against a campervan.
Keep planning
The rest of this site is about the Fraser Coast — the drive up from Brisbane, getting onto K'gari and when the whales are in the bay. There are 11 guides.
