Hobart: The Tasman Peninsula and the east coast

Hobart sits under its mountain at the mouth of a wide estuary, with the Derwent behind it and open ocean below. The city is small enough to leave quickly, and the peninsula and the east coast both begin on the same side of it.

Tasmania rewards a short loop rather than a long one: modest distances, slow roads, and weather that rewrites the plan more often than the map does.

Where this depot puts you

  • The Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur

    South-east of the city, the peninsula hangs off the mainland by a narrow neck, then widens into farmland, bush and a coast of cliffs, arches and blowholes. Port Arthur sits at its far end, a historic site large enough to take most of a day.

  • Freycinet and Wineglass Bay

    Up the east coast, Freycinet is a peninsula of pink granite above white sand, and Wineglass Bay is the beach everyone walks to: a climb to a saddle for the lookout, then down to the water. The walk is the price of the view.

  • The Huon Valley

    South-west, the road follows the Huon River through orchards, forest and small towns, with the Hartz Mountains at the end of a side road. It is the green, quiet direction, and the one to take when the east coast is under weather.

Worth knowing before you book

  • The depot is at Cambridge, east of the city, which suits the peninsula and the east coast and keeps you out of Hobart's morning traffic.
  • The east coast is drier than the west, but the weather turns fast: a still morning can be a gale by afternoon.
  • If you are bringing a vehicle across Bass Strait the ferry needs booking, and the crossing is weather-dependent.
  • Fuel and food thin out along the east coast, so fill up in the towns you pass rather than the one you are aiming for.
